Kutch is a rewarding region for Jain travellers, with ancient tirths, temples and a long Jain mercantile tradition. A little planning makes the journey easier.
Food and water
- Pack dry snacks such as khakhra and roasted chana, since village stops may have limited options.
- In restaurants, ask for dishes without onion and garlic. Kutchi dabeli, for example, is often available in a Jain version if you ask.
- If you observe chauvihar or eat before sunset, plan your sightseeing so that your last meal is not rushed.
- At the dharamshala, meals can be arranged at an additional charge. Ask about timings when you book.
Temple etiquette
- Dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear.
- Many Jain temples do not allow leather items inside, so leave belts and wallets in your room or vehicle.
- Check darshan and aarti timings locally, as they vary by temple.
Tirths to consider
Ancient Bhadreshwar is the best known Jain tirth in Kutch and is roughly a two-hour drive from Bhuj. The Kutch Panch Tirth circuit in the Abdasa region is another popular pilgrimage. Distances are long and roads can be slow, so start early and confirm temple timings before you go.
Documents and money
- Carry an original government photo ID for every adult. It is required at check-in.
- Keep some cash for small shops, autos and village stops.
- Keep valuables with you, as the dharamshala management is not responsible for them.
Plan around check-out
Check-out is at 9:00 AM and check-in from 10:00 AM. If you arrive on an early train, tell the reception in advance so they can guide you. Groups travelling together can ask about the dormitory and bulk bookings.
